A lie is defined as deliberately misleading or creating a false impression. It may seem tempting to lie on a resume because you want to land the job. However, while the idea seems good at the time, it can be detrimental to your career.
A common resume lie revolves around ones education. If you did not receive a degree from 'said' university, then you should definitely not indicate that you have. This may seem like common sense, but time and time again people commit fraud on their resume and it is not worth it. Staging that you have a degree when you don't is inappropriate and can also involve legal repercussions. Years of your hard work and professional dedication can be destroyed if you are dishonest about your academic history, or other parts of your resume.
Another common resume falsehood is falsifying the dates of employment. If you have a gap in your resume, use your cover letter to explain in a positive manner why that is so, rather than extending the dates of your previous job. A background check or a hiring manager following up with your previous position could result in not only getting caught, but gaining a bad reputation in the work world. Be honest about a gap in employment, because lying about it could but your in deep water. Create an honest yet understandable explanation that will not negatively effect your chances of obtaining the job.
There are many other forms of resume falsehoods such as titles, achievements, language fluency, awards, etc. Position yourself accurately and highlight the achievements and accomplishments that are true to you. Do not lie on a resume in any circumstance. Remember: Honesty is the best policy.
